Track & Field

The athletics program at St. John's Catholic School offers Track & Field for grades (4th-8th) each school year. St. John's is active competitor in the HISL (Huntsville Independent School league). HISL is a recreations level program in which approximately seven private schools participate in.

Registration for the 2013 season starts February 13th, 2013.

This year Dave Seeley and Jason Burks will be coaching the track team. This is their third year of coaching the team, and we are very excited for the season ahead!

It is important for athletes to begin running and stretching (best in both a.m. and p.m.) before the first few weeks of practice to minimize injury. For the first two weeks of March they will have practice available everyday starting at 4:30pm and ending at 5:30pm. Your child does not need to be at every practice during this time period. Your runner is welcome everyday, however, the coaches request a minimum of two practices (per week) during these initial two weeks. During these first practices the emphasis is on getting recorded times for everybody in each of the races, so the coaches have a baseline from which to start. Following the first two weeks the team will transition to having practice 3 times a week and the practice will be extended to 6:00pm. The days of practice will vary from week-to-week to accommodate varying schedules with other activities. This will be explained and a schedule will be provided at the parent meeting after the first practice.

The first two weeks of practice the main focus is on obtaining times for each child in each of the various events. As you can imagine this takes a lot of time and requires a lot of additional help to accomplish. The coaches are asking for parents to assist with taking times during this two week period. If you have time and are able to help that would be very appreciated. Helping only requires running a stop watch (provided) and/or writing down times. Timers should arrive at 4:20 for each practice day.

The first part of the practice season is always crazy in terms of the weather. If there is a weather issue the coaches will send out an email with status updates. Please make sure that your child is dressed warmly with sweatshirts/coats, sweat pants, gloves and a hat if needed. Running shoes should be less than 6 mo. old. The runners should also bring their own water bottles. Please do not bring disposable water bottles as this creates a garbage collection nightmare. Our track team will be guests on the Rainbow Elementary Track and we want to ensure that we are welcome in the future, so please stress to your child about cleaning up after themselves. Transportation arrangements need to be made for kids from aftercare to Rainbow Elem – coaches can’t provide transport.

Directions to Rainbow Elementary's track: From St John’s turn right on Hughes Road and take to Highway 72, turn right on Highway 72, and take to Nance Road, and make a right on Nance Road. Follow Nance Road back and you will see Rainbow Elementary on your right. To get to the track drive around Rainbow Middle School on the north side, you will then see the track around back. Make sure when you drop off your child that they have been to the restroom as we do not have access to restrooms at Rainbow.
